The original church was built in 1690 and was first known as The Mount Catholic Church. It was built on top of a hill called The Mount, which is located on the edge of the town of Huddersfield. The original building was much smaller than the current one and was destroyed by flooding in 1720. It was rebuilt in 1722 on a larger scale, with the help of wealthy donors from the local area.
