The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception was built in 1912 and is the former parish church of St. John the Baptist, which was established in 1846. The St. John's parish church, which had been serving the Christian and mainly Irish-American community since its foundation, soon became too small for the growing population brought on by the industrialization of the city of Syracuse. In 1920, the Catholic Diocese of Syracuse was established, and the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception became the official seat of the bishop. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Guyana.

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception sits on a four-acre plot of land in downtown Syracuse and features a Romanesque design. The primary building material is brick and brown sandstone from the H.F. Palmer Quarry in Syracuse, and the building measures 166 feet in total height. The building also features stained-glass windows, a central dome and of course a traditional altar and other furniture pieces.
