The Bishop of Georgetown is the title given to the head of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, which is the diocese of the Episcopal Church in the United States of America (ECUSA) for the District of Columbia, much of Maryland, and small parts of Virginia. The current Bishop of Georgetown is the Most Reverend Mariann Edgar Budde who was elected on November 15, 2011, to a six-year term. The Episcopal Diocese of Washington was founded in 1895 and the first Bishop of Georgetown was elected in 1910. The Bishop of Georgetown is the head of the diocesan staff and presides over the Diocesan Convention, which is the diocese's governing body. The Bishop also serves in the Episcopal Office of Ministry Development to support the spiritual growth of individuals and congregations in the diocese. The Bishop works closely with the diocesan clergy, lay leaders, and volunteers to nurture and sustain vibrant ministries throughout the diocese. The Bishop of Georgetown is involved in service projects and outreach programs within the local community and worldwide. The Bishop also works to attain unity and cultivate a spirit of collaboration between the diocese and its partners in service, especially local and global initiatives of the Episcopal Church. The Bishop of Georgetown presides at confirmations and ordinations, and serves as the primary point of contact for episcopal visitations.
