The Emmanuel Church congregation was organized in May 1817, and the cornerstone of the original building was laid in 1831. The cornerstone of the new building was laid in 1859. The church building was designed by the notable American architect James Renwick. Renwick had designed the nearby St. John's Episcopal Church and the Smithsonian castle, as well as Trinity Church in New York City. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Guyana.
