Worship Method:

The Temple of Venus and Rome is a temple dedicated to the two deities of Venus and Rome, located in the Forum Romanum in Rome. This temple is considered a masterpiece of Roman architecture, and one of the largest temples ever built in the city. The Roman Republic built the temple in Circus Maximus in 121 BCE, but it was destroyed in the sacking of Rome in 410- CE. The temple was rebuilt following the tradition of worship in the ancient temple. Worshipers would enter the temple from the large steps on the east side, and would approach the circular area in the middle of the temple, to perform the rituals. That area contained the sacred altar, featuring a statue of Roman goddess Venus and the imperial eagle which symbolized the person of the Emperor. The Roman Republic assured that the ceremonial rituals performed at the temple were strictly followed and formalized. They were divided into morning and evening rituals. During the day, upon entering the temple, the priestesses of Venus and Rome would offer prayers for the state of the Roman Republic, and would conduct a sacrifice in order to purify the site, and invoke the gods. Later, at night, sacrifices were performed to thank the gods for the state of the Roman Republic. Other rituals would involve planting of olive trees, hymns, and distribution of coins in honor of the gods. The temple of Venus and Rome continues to be a major site of worship in the city today. While its original purpose as a place of state worship is no longer observed, one can still visit the temple to celebrate the gods in various ways. Festivals are held in the honor of the gods, and special ceremonies and rituals are performed to bring luck and success to the devotees. Pilgrimages are also made to the temple by devotees as an act of devotion to the gods. Many visit the temple to ask for divine assistance, or to receive personal blessings from the gods.
