Theodoros Kolokotronis is considered one of the greatest military leaders in Greek history, and his lasting legacy is commemorated through the numerous statues of him throughout Greece. The first of these, a bronze statue, was unveiled in 1875 in Kolokotronis Square in Smyrna. The statue was destroyed during World War I, but it was re-erected in 1938 in the same spot. In 1998, the Greek government organized an international competition for a new design to honour the legendary leader. The winning design came from sculptor Giorgos Zongolopoulos and was constructed in 2001 in the centre of Sparta, Kolokotronis' birth town. The imposing statue has a height of 6.5 meters (21.2 feet) and shows Kolokotronis in full military uniform, his left foot advanced and his cape billowing behind him. Since then, other statues have been erected in several cities and towns throughout Greece. In 2002, a 6-meter tall sculpture of Kolokotronis was unveiled in Athens' Pedion tou Areos park, while in 2004 the original 1875 statue in Smyrna was replaced by a more imposing 10-meter tall statue. More recently, in 2007, a sculpture of Kolokotronis commemorating the bicentennial anniversary of his great victory in the Battle of Maniaki was erected in Tripoli, and in 2010 a statue was erected in Chaidari, Athens, showing Kolokotronis alongside his wife, Pelagia.
