St. Isaac's Cathedral was commissioned by Tsar Alexander I to commemorate his victory over Napoleon in the Napoleonic Wars. An international contest was held to find the best design for the cathedral, and Auguste Montferrand's design was selected for its grandeur and restrained neoclassical elegance. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Russia.
