The monument to the fallen heroes in Greece was established in 1994 to commemorate those servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for their homeland. It was located in Thessaloniki, Northern Greece, and designed by the Greek architect Alexandros Tombazis and sculpted by Maria Papataxiarchis. The aim of the memorial is to honor those who gave their lives for freedom, honor and dignity. At the unveiling, the then-Prime Minister Constantinos Mitsotakis spoke, and stated that, “This monument is a silent and solemn reminder of a debt we can never repay: the debt of those that gave us freedom and the love of our nation, those who gave their lives as a precious sacrifice.” The monument has a pyramidal structure with four wings designed to shape the four most important parts of the Greek state, with each wing symbolizing one of the main parts of Greece: Macedonia, Thrace, the Ionian Islands, and Thessaly. At the apex is a copper star with a laurel wreath, affixed atop a marble panel bearing the inscription “Εγω Αει Ανεξαρτητος” (I am Unconquered).
