Church of the Savior on Blood is an Orthodox Christian cathedral in St. Petersburg, Russia. It was built between 1883 and 1907 to commemorate the assassination of Tsar Alexander II, who was killed in the area in 1881. The cathedral is decorated with mosaics, murals and sculptures depicting religious figures and scenes from Russian history. It is one of the best churches in Russia which you must visit.

History:

The church was designed by architect Alfred Parland in the Russian Revival style, and is made up of varied elements that draw on both Byzantine and Russian styles. The church was built on the spot where Tsar Alexander II was assassinated and the foundation stone was laid by his son, the future Tsar Alexander III, in 1883. Construction was halted after 10 years before the eastern half of the cathedral was finished and the domes were gilded in 1907. The church, and the nearby Imperial Porcelain Factory which was founded by Alexander III, were opened to the public by his daughter, the Empress Maria Feodorovna. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Russia.
