Kumlinge Church is a Lutheran parish church in the Åland Islands of Finland. It is believed to be the oldest surviving Lutheran church in the Åland Islands, as it is one of the oldest surviving stone churches in Finland. The church is usually attributed to the medieval pilgrimage church type and most likely dates from the mid-14th century. Kumlinge Church History Kumlinge Church is believed to have originally been built following the devastation caused by the Great Fire of 1292, which was the biggest fire to have occurred in Finland prior to the 19th century. During the Reformation the church was the first church in Åland to convert to Lutheranism, and it remained a Lutheran church until the 20th century when the Finnish Orthodox Church gained a foothold in the region. It is believed to be the church where the first printing press in the Åland Islands was established.
