Holy Cross Church was founded in 1867 by the Sisters of Mercy and Father John Barry, a renowned missionary priest, as part of San Francisco's original Mission District. The church was originally named St. Boniface Parish, but was changed to Holy Cross in 1876. The original building located at 15th and Mission Streets was destroyed in the 1906 earthquake, and a new structure was completed in 1911 in the Mission Dolores neighborhood.
