Helsinki Old Church is an Evangelical Lutheran church located in the central district of Helsinki, Finland. It is one of the oldest churches in Helsinki, with the first stone laid in 1727. The church was designed by the architect Carl Ludvig Engel in the Classical style, with a square plan and a belfry. History The Helsinki Old Church was originally called Uusi kirkko or ‘New Church’ due to its construction replacing an older wooden church. Construction started in 1727 and the church was consecrated in 1732. Over the years, the church has experienced several renovations, the most recent of which was in 2015 when the clock tower was renovated and now shines with LED lights. Facts * The Helsinki Old Church is the second oldest surviving church in Helsinki, after Helsinki Cathedral. * The two dominate features of Helsinki Old Church is the 3 storey belfry and the clock tower. * The church bells were built in the first half of the 19th century in the St Petersburg Bell Foundry.
