Ethiopian Evangelical church in Helsinki FinlandIn Finland: History,Facts, & Services

The Ethiopian Evangelical Church in Helsinki Finland (EECHF) has a history that stretches back over fifty years, when the ever-growing African immigrant community in Finland was faced with the need for an organisational structure to combine their different religions and cultural backgrounds. Founded in 1966, the church is the first African church established in Finland. The church services are mainly conducted in Amharic, the language of Ethiopia, and strives to remain a place where cultures, religions and ideological backgrounds can come together and find unity. The church is part of the Finnish Evangelical Lutheran Church, and its leadership and activities are focused on providing the Ethiopian community with ministry and services. Sunday services, prayer meetings and gatherings are held several times a week in which Scripture, hymn singing and sermons are conducted in Amharic, followed by different activities that are carried out. Education, health programs, social service and immigration support are important activities for the church, and it also supports charitable institutions that provide help to those in need, especially those affected by war or famine. Other activities provided by the church include an Ethiopian bible study group, an Ethiopian choir and an Ethiopian Bible school, all of which are attended by a growing congregation of both Ethiopians and others from Finland's multicultural population. The church also publishes an Ethiopian bi-monthly newspaper, providing news and insights into the Ethiopian culture. The EECHF is a congregation that seeks to bring people of all different backgrounds together, and its services and ministries spreads the gospel of Christ by radiating love and compassion to all members of the church, regardless of cultural and religious differences.
