The St. Mary Church in Pöide was constructed in the 14th century, replacing an earlier wooden church. It was built by the aristocratic family of von Stackelberg, who were also responsible for the construction of the nearby castle. The church was consecrated on July 16, 1372. Throughout the Middle Ages, the church served as the main place of worship in the Pöide area. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Estonia.
