It dates back to 1935 when the first Roman Catholic Eritrean priest, Monsignor Daniel Ghilea, established the church. The building is a classic example of Eritrean and Italian design, and it was donated by the Italian government. The original church was built using metal sheets, and later, a red stone façade was added to the building.
