Mrgax Medhanie Alem Church is a Coptic Orthodox Church located in the city of Asmara, Eritrea. The Church is believed to be the oldest of the Coptic Orthodox Churches in Asmara. It was built between 1886 and 1887 by the Coptic Orthodox Archbishop of Eritrea and Ethiopia, Abouna Takla Haymanot Habte-Selassie, who is buried at Mrgax Medhanie Alem. The Church was one of a few churches to remain open during the Italian occupation of Ethiopia and Eritrea. It is one of the best churches in Eritrea which you must visit.

History:

The Coptic Orthodox Church of Eritrea and Ethiopia was established by Mrgax Medhanie Alem Church in 1886 under the leadership of Archbishop Abouna Takla Haymanot Habte-Selassie. He was the first Coptic Orthodox patriarch of Ethiopia and Eritrea. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Eritrea.
