The Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church was established in the 4th Century by Syrian Orthodox settlers from the Axumite Empire. The Church was initially administered by the Coptic Church of Ethiopia but gained autonomy in the 1880s. Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church was included in the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2008, making it the first African denomination of Christianity to be included in the list.
