The Gemle Eritrean Orthodox Church is an Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Christian Church located in Gezzamay in Eritrea. The church was founded in 1965, shortly after Eritrea's independence from Ethiopia. It was the first Eritrean Orthodox Church to emerge independent of Ethiopian rule. The church is part of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church, and its members are mainly Ge'ez speaking, although members in other language and cultural backgrounds are also welcome. The church’s history dates back to the early 20th century when the Kingdom of Ethiopia gained control over Eritrea. During this time, Ethiopians living in Eritrea were heavily persecuted and treated as second-class citizens. Following Eritrean independence from Ethiopia in 1991, the Eritrean Orthodox Church was established as an independent denomination of the Orthodox Church, thus leading to the formation of the Gemle Eritrean Orthodox Church. The church is dedicated to spreading the message of love and peace among all people. It focuses on biblical teachings and encourages its members to participate in the regular church services. It also encourages its members to seek out and build personal relationships with the priests in order to further their spiritual growth. The church is a member of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church Synod, which consists of the seven Autonomous Eritrean Orthodox Archdioceses and has an archbishop based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The services conducted at the Gemle Eritrean Orthodox Church include liturgy, bible studies, spiritual formation, weddings, praying services, baptisms, and special events. The church also hosts community-oriented events, such as potlucks and sports activities.
