Adi Kanta Eritrean Orthodox Church is a Christian denomination within the Orthodox Church in Eritrea. It is one of the largest religious bodies in the country and serves the Orthodox Christian population in Eritrea and abroad. It is also one of the oldest churches in Eritrea, having been established in the early 19th century by the Abuna (or Patriarch) of the Coptic Church, Macarius III, who had been sent to the region by Pope Cyril V in 1848. It currently has 5,400 churches in all nine regions of Eritrea, with a total of over one million adherents. The Adi Kanta Eritrean Orthodox Church has its own spiritual hierarchy, including the Patriarch, the Archbishop of Asmara, and other bishops. It is headed by the Eritrean Patriarch Abune Antonios, who was enthroned in 1992. The Church follows the ancient Eastern Orthodox tradition and has its own liturgical language, Ge'ez, which is still used by some priests today. Adi Kanta Eritrean Orthodox Church services are held in both Ge'ez and Tigrinyia and the liturgical books are in both languages. The Eritrean Orthodox Church is a member of the World Council of Churches, the Catholicosate of Seleucia-Ctesiphon, the Ethiopian World Federation, and the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church (EOTCUS).
