Abune Filipos Orthodox Tewahedo Church Merhano In Eritrea is a historic Orthodox Christian church located in Rwchete, Eritrea. It was established in 1523 and was one of the earliest churches in East Africa. Abune Filipos is an ancient Eritrean church that maintains an active congregation of worshippers who share a common faith and long history of faith and service within their community. Abune Filipos is a part of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church and follows the same Orthodox liturgical calendar as the rest of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. It has affiliations to the Coptic Orthodox Church in Alexandria and is sometimes referred to as a Copto-Eritrean church. Abune Filipos is a major religious site in Eritrea and is well known for its unique architecture and vast compound. The church houses an impressive collection of ornate wooden, stone and metal artwork that have been preserved dating back to the 19th century. The site also contains awe-inspiring old manuscripts, hymnals, and Coptic texts, some of which are written in Ge'ez, a liturgical language of the Ethiopian Church. Abune Filipos offers a variety of services and activities to its members including a range of liturgical services, educational programs and spiritual counseling. It also serves as a social hub for the local community, offering traditional events and gatherings to foster fellowship and magnify the church's role in its members' lives.
