History:

Times Square has served as one of the central symbols and hubs of New York City since its inception. Though it has been known by many names throughout its history, it originally was given the name Longacre Square by property developer Edward S. Moore in 1872. To the public, it was first known as the site of a vaudeville theater, The Hammerstein's Victoria, which opened in 1904. In 1904, Times Square was officially renamed in honor of The New York Times Building's opening on the site. It quickly gained popularity over the next decade as its illuminated advertisements and popular events became iconic city staples. In 1907, the corner of Broadway and Seventh Avenue held the first New Year's Eve celebration in the square; since then, it has become a tradition to gather in Times Square to watch the famous ball drop on New Year's Eve.
