The history of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial begins with the birth of a young sculptor from New York City. In 1923, Gutzon Borglum was chosen to carve a majestic mountain memorial featuring the likeness of four great presidents onto the granite face of the Black Hills in South Dakota. Gutzon had a vision for the grandiose project that would give meaning to those who viewed its majesty. He believed that Mount Rushmore should become an inspiring symbol of democracy and a tribute to all the presidents who had made their nation great. Gutzon’s ambitious endeavor took 14 years to complete due to high degrees of difficulty. From 1923 to 1941, a team of sculptors, engineers, and workers of various disciplines worked day and night to create the memorial. The project required the removal of 487,000 tons of rock and involved the use of dynamite, telephone wires, an overhead railway, and a steam drill. On October 31, 1941, the Mount Rushmore National Memorial was officially opened to the public.
