History:

The Gettysburg National Military Park was established in 1895 to commemorate the Battle of Gettysburg, which was fought July 1-3, 1863, during the American Civil War. The Battle of Gettysburg was the bloodiest battle of the war, with more than 51,000 casualties. The first director of the park was Brigadier General John Newton, who served in the Union army during the Battle of Gettysburg. Under Newton's direction, the park was established to preserve the battlefield and educate the public about the fight for freedom. To ensure that future generations can learn about the Battle of Gettysburg and the Civil War, the Gettysburg National Military Park was designated a National Historical Landmark in 1966. In addition, the park was authorized in 1978 as part of the National Park Service for the purpose of preserving the battlefield in its entirety. Today, the Gettysburg National Military Park includes more than 3200 acres of land and offers visitors the chance to experience the battlefield firsthand. The park includes the Cemetery Hill, Seminary Ridge, and Pickett’s Charge areas, among others.
