Bath Abbey In England: History,Facts, & Services
History:
The current building was built on the site of earlier churches, including a Norman-era chapel and a 12th-century monastery. The 7th Earl of Bath and local cleric John of Tours initiated the building of the current church, designed by renowned abbot Robert of Abingdon. It was completed in the mid-15th century. The abbey was dissolved in 1539, when Henry VIII ordered the destruction and dismantling of the monasteries. The abbey was subsequently used as a Cathedral and was declared a parish church in 1608. The most prominent features of the Abbey are its two west towers, a wide nave, and seven stone chapels. It also has a number of stained-glass windows, as well as a grand organ. The Abbey holds services and concerts on a regular basis, including daily worship, choral evensong, visiting choirs and orchestras, and an annual Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. It is also home to the Bath Abbey Youth Choir and the Bath Bach Choir.
