Brief History:

The Mosque of Al-Mu’ayyad Sheikh is located in the Islamic Cairo district in Egypt. It was built in 1415 by the Mamluk Sultan Al- Ashraf Sha'ban in memory of Al-Mu’ayyad Sheikh, an Islamic scholar and preacher who was appointed Grand Qadi of Egypt by the Fatimid Caliph Al-Mustansir. The mosque is built in a typical 15th century Mamluk style, with a square courtyard and sahn surrounded by four iPorticoed riwaqs (prayer halls). The sahn is surmounted by an elegant Venetian-style dome which stands out from its orthodox Islamic architecture. The domes and minarets of the mosque are made of large blocks of grey limestone, the walls and floors are filled with intricate Mamluk tile and marble decorations. The interior of the mosque is divided into two main areas; a domed prayer area located in the center of the complex, and an attached madrassa (religious school). The main prayer hall is decorated with a stunning array of intricate painted floral motifs, and intricate marble and enamel mosaics.
