History:

The Teleférico de Puerto Plata is a 1.4 kilometers-long cable car system which connects Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic with Isabel de Torres Mountain, a popular tourist destination providing spectacular views of ocean and nearby city. The cable car system, which is believed to be the first of its kind in the Caribbean, was opened on November 3, 1975. The project was initiated and funded by the National Bureau of Roads (Ministerio de Obras Públicas), which was given the economic assignment of developing the local tourist industry of Puerto Plata. The construction of the Teleférico was a combined effort of local and foreign constructors. The cable car system's design and installation was carried out by Elsid SA, a French engineering firm that specialized in overhead transportation systems, and the on-site construction and assembly was performed by local constructor, José Candelario. The Teleférico de Puerto Plata is operated by a local company and runs every day, rain or shine. It starts from the Maritime Terminal of Puerto Plata, going up the mountain and with several stops en route. The track has thirteen stops, with the pinnacle station at 890 meters above sea level. At the top station, visitors can access the scenic trails and the monument of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, a large figure, which was installed in 1930 to celebrate the centenary of the province. The monument, as well as the surrounding scenery of the mountain, makes the Teleférico an excellent opportunity to visit the region in an exciting and unforgettable way. Since its opening, the Teleférico has become one of the most important cultural attractions of the Caribbean and one of the most used systems of cable transport in Latin America. Every year, close to 150.000 passengers enjoy a ride in its baskets and experience the best views of the city and the Caribbean. In recent years, the cable car system has been renovated and its capacity has been increased in order to keep up with the ever-increasing number of visitors. In 2019, the Teleférico de Puerto Plata celebrated its 44th anniversary and continues to be an important symbol of the Dominican Republic and an important part of the local culture.
