History:

The Puerto de San Felipe area of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic was a seaport and center of trade that has a rich and interesting history dating back to the colonial era. During that time, the area was called San Felipe de Puerto Plata. It became an important military base and port that was used similarly to the Port of Santo Domingo, which was the main center of trade in the Dominican Republic. In the late eighteenth century, the Port of San Felipe was the main port of trade for the country. Large vessels delivered much needed merchandise to the island and it provided a vital link between the island and other parts of the Caribbean. San Felipe was also the point of entry for many European immigrants seeking to start a new life in the Caribbean. These immigrants would often disembark at the port and proceed to settle further inland. In the nineteenth century, significant fortifications were built in the port area to protect it from attack and theft. The fortifications eventually proved ineffective, however, and the area was heavily damaged during the Dominican-American War in 1916. More recently, the area has undergone significant revitalization efforts as it is now becoming the main cargo port for Puerto Plata.
