The Parque Zoológico Nacional (National Zoo of the Dominican Republic) is located in Santo Domingo, in the Savannah region of the city. It was founded in 1975, by presidential decree, in order to collect, conserve, maintain, reproduce, and display representative species of the Dominican Republic's flora and fauna in a safe and appropriate environment. The zoo also works to protect these species from their threat of extinction, as well as to provide education and recreation for its patrons. The zoo serves as both a reserve and an educational center for the public as well as other Dominican Republic zoos, assisting in the regulation and conservation of different species from the country’s natural diversity. Through joint efforts with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, the zoo works to guarantee the conservation of the flora and fauna of the Dominican Republic through long term projects, research, and conservation campaigns. The zoo is split into different zones, including a Nocturnal Zone, Aquatic Zone, and Wild Animal Zone. It is home to over 200 species of animals, with roughly 84 species of birds, 8 species of mammals, 7 species of amphibians, and 4 species of reptiles.
