History:

Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Paz is a Roman Catholic church located in Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic. The church was originally built in 1541 by the Spanish colonial government, and is considered the third oldest remaining colonial structure in the city. It was originally established as a monastery and was considered a symbol of peace and harmony among local residents. In 1586 the Church was renamed the Church of Our Lady of the Peace as part of the Church's dedication to peace and reconciliation. During this time, the new church was also used as a school for the training of local clergy. During the 17th century, the church was expanded and renovated several times under the authority of religious leaders at the time. Many of the changes to the structure were considered to be aesthetic or decorative, as the church added more stained glass windows and statuary, and was completely enclosed by a stone wall. The Church was heavily damaged during the Haitian-Dominican War of 1822 and subsequently passed to Dominican control. However, the Church quickly recovered and was completely renovated in the late 1800’s through a combined effort by the Church and local citizens. This renovation included several new features, such as a bell tower and an expanded seating area. Today, Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Paz remains one of the most visited churches in Santo Domingo. It serves as a pilgrimage site for many religious followers of the Dominican Republic and to this day symbolizes peace and unity among the region’s inhabitants.
