Würzburg Cathedral is a Romanesque basilica in Würzburg, Bavaria, Germany, and the seat of the prince-bishops of Würzburg. The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Kilian, it was originally dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul. It is one of the main churches of the diocese of Würzburg, and the bishop of Würzburg has been the cathedral's Abbot since 1617. Construction began in 1041 as part of the preparations for the dedication of the bishopric's new cathedral, and was completed by 1063. The building is one of the most important masterpieces of German Romanesque architecture, with its impressive west front, two massive towers, and beautiful stained glass windows. The cathedral underwent extensive restoration work between 1967 and 1983. In 1720, the diocese was secularized and the cathedral became a parish church. It reverted to its previous role in 1817 after the diocese was restored. During the 19th century, the cathedral was extensively remodelled, with the Baroque style interior reluctantly accepted by the Catholic hierarchy.
