History:

Oktoberfest is a major cultural celebration held in Munich, Germany. Although the tradition dates back to the early 19th century, the modern version of Oktoberfest was founded in 1810, when Crown Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. To honor their union, the citizens of Munich were invited to attend the festivities held on the fields in front of the city gates. During the early days, the party was purely a royal celebration. But by 1819, the event had become open to everyone – and it has grown larger and wilder ever since. Originally, the festival ran for 16 to 18 days, ending on the first Sunday in October. However, in the past 50 years, the end date has been moved up to October 3 so festival-goers can enjoy the beautiful Bavarian autumn weather. Oktoberfest is now the world’s largest fair, with more than 6 million people attending every year, and is one of Germany’s most important cultural events. Beer tents, carnival rides, and traditional Bavarian food are some of the main attractions of the festival. The main beer tent is the Schottenhamel Tent, which was built in 1896, and serves a variety of traditional Bavarian beers.
