History:

St. John's Church in Lüneburg is the oldest evangelical church in the Old Town of Lüneburg. It was first documented in 1115 as part of the former Nordhagen monastery. The church grew in importance over the following centuries and in the late Middle Ages served as the center of the Bishopric of Lüneburg. The interior of the church is decorated in the historic Baroque style and features a pulpit from 1709, an ornamental altar from the 17th century, and a seven-armed Gothic chandelier from the 15th century. The church is also home to numerous works of art of significance, including an 1802 painting by the well-known German painter, Philipp Otto Runge. In 1990, the original church building underwent renovation to restore its original Gothic design, which was replaced by Baroque elements in the 17th century. After the renovation and subsequent preservation of the building, the first service was held there in 1992. Today, St. John's Church serves as a place of worship and is open to the public.
