History:

St. Bartholomew’s Church is a Protestant parish church in the small town of Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps of Germany. It was built in the late 15th century and underwent some restorations in the 17th and 19th centuries. It is dedicated to Saint Bartholomew, the patron of the parish of Berchtesgaden. In the 16th century the church underwent reformations during the Protestant Reformation and became a Protestant Church. During the Thirty Years’ War, much of the church was destroyed and had to be rebuilt. Under the rule of Prince-Archbishop Lothar Franz von Schönborn from 1708-1723, the church underwent some renovation in the Baroque style. The church was extended and a new sculpted door was added. In 1812, the church underwent a major renovation and restoration project. The original late Gothic chancel was replaced with a Neoclassical one. The organ was refurbished and the altars were replaced with a new marble one. In 1929, the church was damaged by an earthquake and required some repairs. Throughout the 20th century, the church building has been preserved and maintained and it continues to serve as a beloved Protestant church in Berchtesgaden.
