St. Knud’s Church is likely named after King Canute (Knud) Lavard, who was canonized in 1170. Canute’s son, Valdemar I, established a Franciscan monastery near the church and built a Gothic chapel named after his father. The chapel was integrated into the existing church structure in the fifteenth century. The church was damaged by fire in 1780, but was reconstructed in the late ninetheenth century. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Denmark.
