Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria In Germany: Overview,Prominent Features,History,Interesting facts
Overview:
Neuschwanstein Castle is a 19th-century Romanesque Revival palace on a rugged hill above the village of Hohenschwangau near Füssen in southwestern Bavaria, Germany. The palace was commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria as a retreat and in honour of Richard Wagner. Ludwig paid for the palace out of his own personal fortune and by means of extensive borrowing, rather than Bavarian public funds. The palace was intended as a personal refuge for the reclusive king, but it was opened to the paying public immediately after his death in 1886. Since then more than 61 million people have visited Neuschwanstein Castle. More than 1.3 million people visit annually, making it one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. Neuschwanstein embodies both the contemporaneous architectural fashion of the Romanticism movement and Ludwig's sentimental nostalgia for the Middle Ages, as evidenced by his inclination toward shrouding the palace in measures of secrecy and seclusion. The palace was designed as a homage to Richard Wagner’s operas, and its palace interiors were decorated with characters from his works. The palace has appeared prominently in several movies and was the inspiration for Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle. It is one of the most beautiful monuments in Germany

History:
Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria is one of the world’s most famous castles. It was built by King Ludwig II in the 19th century and is extravagantly decorated with turrets, towers, and other features that evoke a fairytale atmosphere. The castle construction began in 1869 by architect Eduard Riedel and under the direction of King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Originally, Neuschwanstein was meant to be a retreat for the King, a personal refuge from his growing mental instability. The castle construction concentrated heavily on the romantic Medieval style, influenced by Ludwig’s admiration for the operas of Richard Wagner. Throughout the 1880s, Neuschwanstein was constantly improved and furnished with luxurious and lavish decorations. A small museum was installed to house Ludwig’s collection of tapestries and paintings. Even a private theater was included, where the King could act as a playwright or hold private performances. But as the construction of the castle was nearing completion in 1886, Ludwig II was declared insane by court. It is believed he committed suicide shortly after that. Neuschwanstein was opened to the public shortly after his death and has since become a popular tourist attraction and symbol of Bavaria. The castle has also been the inspiration for a number of Disney movies and theme parks. Today, visitors from around the world come to admire the castle’s grand architecture. Neuschwanstein is a testament to the skill and vision of its builder, Ludwig II, and will continue to captivate and awe visitors for years to come.
