The museum is dedicated to the study of the ancient and medieval maritime cultures of the eastern Mediterranean region, and has been instrumental in the field of underwater archaeology. At the time, underwater archaeology had only recently been established as a field of study, and the museum was one of the first to introduce students to the scientific study of underwater archaeology. In 1975, the museum received a grant from the World Heritage Fund, which allowed it to build a conservatory and exhibition gallery. It has since become one of the most visited archaeological sites in the world and is also a popular tourist destination.
