Koldinghus Castle located in Kolding, Denmark is a classic example of medieval Danish architecture. The castle was originally a fortress but was transformed over time into a large Renaissance palace. The castle has been used for centuries as a royal residence, starting with the house of Knud the Great and continuing with the House of Oldenburg, the ruling family of Denmark until 1863. The first castle in Kolding was built in 1265 by Margrethe I, Queen of Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The castle was built on the banks of the Kolding Fjord, and in later years, served as a part of the medieval fortifications of Kolding. It was built mainly of stone and brick, and was used as a royal residence and fortress until the mid-17th century. In the mid-16th century, Christian III of Denmark, renovated and expanded the castle into the palace it is today. He added two large wings on either side of the main building, with neoclassical facades, and rebuilt much of the interior to create a luxurious palace, complete with exotic tapestries and fine art. The 17th century saw further expansions to the castle, including the addition of towers and terraces. The Danish royal family continued to live in the castle until the early 19th century when it was destroyed by a great fire. The fire caused extensive damage to the castle and destroyed much of the interior. In the wake of the fire, restoration took place in a historicist style which kept the spirit of the castle, but incorporated neoclassical and regency features.
