Ettal Abbey is a Benedictine monastery situated in the village of Ettal near Oberammergau in Bavaria, Germany. The foundation of the abbey, which is dedicated to St. Mary and St. Nicholas, goes back to 1330 when the local nobleman, Lyshared of Ettal, granted the site and its lands to the Benedictines of Bavaria’s Tegernsee Abbey (Marienmünster Abbey). The monastery was rebuilt in a Baroque style following a period of decline in the 17th century and it was once again home to a number of religious communities. During the course of the 18th century, the abbey was restored to its former glory and remains one of the most powerful and influential Benedictine abbeys in Germany, with its influence stretching far beyond Bavaria. Ettal Abbey is now a popular tourist destination in Bavaria, with the Romanesque church, chapels and cloister being of particular interest to visitors.
