History:
Arken Museum of Modern Art in Ishøj, Denmark has a long and distinguished history. The museum was founded in 1996 by Knud W. Jensen, a payment to the city of Ishøj for the construction of a car-park. Jensen had a broad vision for the museum, to create a platform for contemporary art which could be enjoyed by a broad audience. The museum's first exhibition opened in 1997 and featured artwork by Dan Graham, Per Kirkeby, Richard Prince and others. In 1999, Jensen and his wife donated their personal collection to the museum, transforming the institution into one of the leading modern art museums in the country. In the early 2000s, the museum underwent a period of expansion with new exhibition spaces, a library and cafe being added. It also began to host more international shows with important works from the likes of Anselm Kiefer, Wim Wenders and Tracey Emin arriving at Arken. In 2005, the museum officially became Arken Museum of Modern Art, Ishøj, as it is known today, after the purchase of the Tårnby cobblestone farmhouse to house and display the growing collection. In 2008, Knud W. Jensen sadly passed away but his legacy continues to this day, with Arken Museum expanding its collection, programming and audience appeals every year. In 2019, the museum underwent an expansion, tripling its exhibition spaces and adding a restaurant, event space and a large outdoor area.
