History:
The Antalya Sculpture Museum is located in the old city of Antalya, Turkey, and has been in existence since 1971. Although it had a slow start, mainly consisting of only 12 sculptures, the museum has grown to include over 600 sculptures from all around the world, including Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, Ottoman and modern art. The museum was first opened in 1971 and was a part of the Antalya Culture Centre. At first, the museum only included 12 sculptures from Anatolia. Throughout the 1980s the museum continued to expand its collection and was used as an important centre for art research in Anatolia. In 1991, Antalya's Archeology Museum advanced the sculpture museum by including a sculpture hall and expanding the number of sculptures to include over 600 from all different time periods. Furthermore, in 1997, the museum joined the National Palaces Painting and Sculpture Museum Network in Turkey allowing more Turkish artwork to be showcased in the museum. In 2007, the museum launched its first public exhibition, and in 2012, the Antalya Museum of International Sculpture opened its doors. The museum now includes sculptures from all around the world, although artwork from the Mediterranean is still heavily represented. The Antalya Sculpture Museum is now one of the most important centres for sculpture in the world. It is constantly evolving and works in connection with universities, artists and art movements to improve and promote the appreciation of sculpture in Turkey.
