Abu Simbel temples in Aswan are two massive rock-cut temples located at Abu Simbel in Nubia, Southern Egypt. Built during the reign of Pharaoh Ramesses II in the 13th century BC, these temples commemorate the Pharaoh’s greatness and the region’s history. The temples were carved out of the solid rock cliffs and feature many hieroglyphs, statues, and beautifully preserved art and carvings. The larger of the two temples is dedicated to Ramesses II and the gods Ra-Horakhty, Amun, and Ptah. The second temple is dedicated to his wife Nefertari. Both temples were decorated with colorful paint and intricate designs. In 1960, the temples were relocated to higher ground after the construction of the Aswan Dam which threatened to submerge them. After relocation, the Abu Simbel temples underwent a massive restoration process and are now listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. They are considered to be one of the greatest monuments constructed during the time of the Ancient Egyptian Empire. Today, visitors may visit the temple complex, marveling at the artwork and enjoying a guided tour outlining the fascinating history and culture of the temples.
