The process is done by professional priests, who are knowledgeable in the various rituals associated with the worship of Lord Shiva. Every day, devotees perform the traditional rituals known as ‘puja’ or ‘prathishta’ to receive the lord’s blessings. During the pujas, the priest will place a copper vessel – commonly known as a ‘kalasam’ – at the feet of Lord Shiva. Within this vessel, the devotee will offer sweet delicacies, flowers, and incense. Once the vessel has been filled with offerings, the devotee will then pay respect to Lord Shiva by chanting mantras like ‘Om Namah Shivaya’. During special pujas, such as those for the Chariot Festival or for the New Year, more elaborate rituals may be performed.
