History:

The Cyprus Mines Corporation (CMC) established the CMC Sports Club in Skouriotissa in 1961, on their mine premises in the area. It was formed and run by workers from the mine and was originally intended to provide recreational activities for workers and to foster a spirit of healthy rivalry among them. The club began to participate in the local leagues in the same year and quickly established itself as a successful team. They reached the national play-offs in 1965, 1966 and 1972 and represented Cyprus in other international tournaments. In 1971, CMC won the Carlsberg Cup, a Cyprus-wide cup competition, before becoming professional in 1973. In the 1973/74 season, CMC formed a professional team and merged with AC Omonia Nicosia. They finished second in the league and won the Cyprus Charity Cup in 1974, beating Nicosia rivals APOP Kinyras Peyias 4-3. The club went on to win the Cyprus Cup four times, in 1975, 1977, 1979 and 1980, during a period of unprecedented success that saw them become one of the best teams in the Mediterranean region. By 1980 the club’s fortunes began to decline and it eventually ceased to exist in 1988. Its legacy, however, is still felt today, as many of the players it nurtured went on to play for other teams in Cyprus and beyond, and its memory will live on in the history of Cypriot football.
