History:

In the 12th century, the Byzantine Emperor, Andronicus I Comnenus subsidised the construction of the Ayios Neophytos Monastery in the forested hills near Tala, Paphos, Cyprus. This was done in honour of Blessed Neophytos of Vatousa, an ascetic monk and scholar from Asia Minor who had arrived to the island from Constantinople in 1159. The construction was supervised by the Emperor himself and took two years before the monastery was formally blessed by the Archbishop of Cyprus.
