The ancient Odeon of Paphos, located in the ancient ruins of the coastal city, is a major example of ancient Greco-Roman entertainment which once stood in the region. The Odeon was built in the late 2nd century BC, near the Royal Palace of Paphos, making it the oldest remaining theatre on the island. It is believed to be the most ancient theatre in the whole of Cyprus. The structure was most likely used for theatrical performances, such as comedies and tragedies, but also for public meetings, such as political assemblies. The construction of the Odeon was most likely undertaken by the successors of Alexander the Great and it featured cavea, the builders' signature. The theatre of Paphos is an ammonite-shaped theatre, with a stepped auditorium, while a large propylean entrance decorated with piloted stairs on either side leads to the stage. The theatre has two tiers and steps that allowed for up to 800 people to watch performances on the stage. After the fall of the Roman Empire in 324, the theatre fell into disrepair and was eventually abandoned.
