Plaza de la Revolución is located in the densely populated municipality of Plaza in Havana, Cuba. The square was constructed in 1959, soon after the overthrow of the US-backed Cuban dictatorship and the establishment of a socialist government. The square became the symbolic center of the new Cuban Revolution, representing a modernizing and anti-imperialist vision of the country’s future. The design of the square was decided by Cuban president Fidel Castro and architect Roberto Gottardi, who wanted to create a focal point for the Cuban revolution.
