History:

Turrialba Volcano National Park, located in central Costa Rica, was created in 1979 to protect and preserve the forested areas, streams, and other areas in the vicinity of the volcano. Its mission was to protect the area from the increasing human activities, such as agriculture and cattle raising. The Turrialba Volcano has had a long history and has been a part of cultural stories and beliefs among the local people for centuries. The locals believed that the tallest peak of the volcano was where the god of the storms lived, while the lower levels were sacred to the god of medicine. The volcano had very little scientific attention until the mid-1800s when several scientific observations were made to study the volcano and its activity. Later, in the late 1800s, more extensive research was conducted, leading to the first proper cartography of the volcano.
