History:
The Las Pumas Rescue Center was established in 1998 near Liberia, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The center was founded by Maria Reeves and her partner, Miguel Leiva, as a way to conserve and protect wild felines that had been threatened by poaching, deforestation, and the pet trade. The center is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating jaguars, pumas, ocelots, margays, and jaguarundis. The rehabilitated animals are taken to a natural reserve where they are completely free to roam and interact with each other. Las Pumas Rescue Center works with local communities and other organizations to raise awareness about the conservation of wild felines, as well as to reduce human-wildlife conflict. The center works to ensure wild felines’ survival and improve their living conditions in the region. The reserve provides a safe place for the species to live and it also offers education programs and environmental projects such as reforestation. Las Pumas Rescue Center has won the Costa Rica Wildlife Rescue Institute award for its tremendous work in conservation of wild cats in the country.
