History:
Cerro Castillo is a mountain located in the Aisén region in the southeastern area of Chile, within the Magallanes Province, lying roughly 140km East of the provincial capital, the city of Punta Arenas. Its peak rises 2,889 metres (9,480 feet) above sea level, making it one of the highest mountains in the area. Cerro Castillo was first studied and surveyed by the end of the 18th century, when it was included in the cartography of the Díaz de Guzman scientific expedition. After this, the mountain remained largely unexplored until the 20th century. By the 1930s the rise of tourism in the Magallanes region meant that Cerro Castillo came in to prominence as a daring and adventurous place of exploration for travelers from all over the world. The first climb of the mountain was performed in 1934, under the direction of Chilean Statesman and Lieutenant General Arturo Prat, who was killed at the Battle of Iquique just a few months later. After Prat's efforts, Cerro Castillo became the focus of exploratory and mountaineering expeditions which brought interest to the area from far and wide. Many of these travelers created memorable stories of being in the wilds of the mountain, and today Cerro Castillo still draws a large number of climbers each year. Today, the many trails and climbing routes of Cerro Castillo can be enjoyed by mountaineers of all experience levels, and climbers can access the mountain range from the nearby settlement of Punta Arenas, which provides an excellent basecamp for any expeditions to the range. The burgeoning tourism industry in the area has also meant that Cerro Castillo now has an array of lodges and services to allow tourists to get the most out of this unique chance to explore this vast and challenging mountain range.
