History
The chapel was founded in 1517 by Diogo de Sá Coutinho, an influential local nobleman. It was initially part of the Church of Our Lady of Conception, but was later placed under the invocation of Saint Cecilia. The chapel underwent significant renovations around the middle of the 17th century, partially funded by the Count of Vila Real.

Located just 11 miles away from Santarem, the Capela Várzea is classified as a Cultural Heritage Site of Public Interest by the Portuguese government. It is known for its ornate facade, and the gilded altarpiece which is located in its main nave. Within the chapel, there are also several works of art, including polychromatic tiles and paintings.
